Universidad de Manila Implements Equal Pay Scale to Champion Gender Equity
In a bold and transformative move, the Universidad de Manila (UDM) has implemented a new
policy aimed at ensuring gender equity in its pay scale for the academic year 2023–2024. As one
of the city’s leading public institutions of higher learning, UDM is not only committed to
academic excellence but also to promoting social equity and justice.
The implementation of this policy marks a significant step forward in addressing gender pay
gaps within the institution, aligning with the principles of the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goal 8 (SDG 8), which emphasizes inclusive and sustainable economic growth and
decent work for all.
Historically, pay scales at UDM, like many academic institutions, were influenced by factors
such as rank, tenure, and academic qualifications. However, under the new policy, which is
guided by the Equal Employment Opportunity standards and Local Budget Circular No. 149,
UDM ensures that male and female employees receive equal remuneration for equivalent
positions. This initiative not only promotes fairness but also sets a powerful example for other
educational institutions to follow.
