From June 1, 2020, to February 7, 2022, the City of Manila made a significant stride in
addressing urban poverty with the completion of the Tondominium 1 public housing
project. This initiative, directly aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) – No
Poverty, has provided much–needed housing for numerous families, including students
from the Universidad de Manila (UDM).
Tondominium 1, located at 1 Vitas St, Tondo, Manila, stands as a 15–story beacon of hope
for the city’s low–income residents. With 12 units per floor, each spanning 44 square
meters and featuring two bedrooms, the building offers safe and secure living spaces for
its residents. The project goes beyond just providing shelter; the ground floor is equipped
with a daycare center, office, livelihood center, and essential maintenance facilities,
ensuring that residents have access to necessary services and opportunities for economic
empowerment.
Manila Mayor Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso, a prominent figure in the city’s
governance, played a key role in the development and completion of this project. Under
the supervision of Officer–in–Charge Alexander T. Rosete, the Tondominium 1 project has
become a model of effective urban housing solutions aimed at lifting residents out of
poverty.
UDM students who have benefited from this housing project now have the stability they
need to focus on their education, furthering their potential to break the cycle of poverty.
This initiative underscores the Manila city government’s commitment to improving the
quality of life for its residents, providing them with not only housing but also a foundation
for a better future.
The Tondominium 1 project is a shining example of how public housing can be a powerful
tool in the fight against poverty, directly impacting the lives of students and families in
need. By addressing the basic need for shelter, the city government is empowering
residents to pursue education and employment opportunities, thereby contributing to the
broader goal of poverty reduction in Manila.
