On May 22, 2019, the Universidad de Manila (UDM) officially implemented the City of
Manila’s memorandum regarding Republic Act 11210, the “105–Day Expanded Maternity
Leave Law,” and Republic Act 8187, the “Paternity Leave Act of 1996.” Aligned with
Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) – Gender Equality, these policies ensure that
UDM employees, both male and female, are provided with the necessary support during
the crucial stages of childbirth and childcare.
RA 11210 grants female faculty and employees maternity leave, regardless of civil status,
child legitimacy, employment status, or mode of delivery, ensuring comprehensive
coverage for all women employees. The maternity leave can be taken either before or after
childbirth, allowing flexibility for the mother. Meanwhile, RA 8187 provides male
employees or alternate caregivers with seven days of paternity leave, which can be taken
continuously or intermittently before, during, or after childbirth.
These policies not only promote the well–being of UDM employees but also foster an
inclusive and supportive work environment, empowering both parents to balance work and
family life.
