Manila, Philippines – In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), “Gender Equality,” Universidad De Manila (UDM) has taken a significant step toward ensuring a safe and inclusive environment by establishing a Committee on Decorum and Investigation (CODI) to address issues of sexual harassment and discrimination within the university. The policy, implemented on February 22, 2023, reinforces UDM’s commitment to a non-discriminatory academic and professional environment for women.
The CODI is tasked with handling complaints of sexual harassment and upholding decorum within the university. Comprising seven members, of which five are female, the committee ensures a gender-sensitive approach in resolving cases and maintaining fairness throughout investigations. This initiative aims to protect the rights of employees and students by providing them with a formal mechanism to report and address harassment and discrimination.
A Commitment to Gender Equality
The establishment of CODI is a direct response to the university’s commitment to SDG 5, particularly under the provision of 5.6.1 – Policy of Non-Discrimination Against Women. This policy ensures that all forms of discrimination, including those based on gender, are eliminated from the university’s environment, fostering equality and respect for all members of the UDM community.
UDM President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria emphasized the importance of this policy, stating, “The creation of CODI is a pivotal step in reinforcing our commitment to gender equality and ensuring that UDM remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone. Women, in particular, must feel empowered to speak up against harassment and discrimination, knowing that their concerns will be taken seriously and addressed through a formal process.”
Protecting Rights and Promoting Equality
The Committee on Decorum and Investigation will oversee cases with utmost confidentiality, ensuring that those who come forward with complaints are treated with respect and fairness. By establishing this committee, UDM aims to create an environment where women feel safe and supported, free from any form of discrimination or harassment.
Looking Forward: Ensuring a Safe and Inclusive Environment
As UDM continues to prioritize the well-being of its employees and students, the implementation of the Committee on Decorum and Investigation marks a significant advancement in promoting gender equality and protecting women’s rights. With policies like this, UDM is setting an example for other institutions in fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect.
