Manila, Philippines – In a continued effort to promote good health and well-being, Universidad De Manila (UDM) launched a comprehensive research initiative titled “Mind Matters: Evaluating Mental Health Awareness and Services Among Healthcare Providers in the City of Manila” on February 15, 2023. The research, spearheaded by UDM President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria and University Research Center Director Dr. Leila R. Gano, aims to assess the level of mental health awareness and the availability of services among healthcare providers across Manila.
This research aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), “Good Health and Well-being,” as it seeks to address mental health issues, which are often underrepresented in public health discussions. The findings from this research will serve as the foundation for a city-wide mental health program, supported by the City Health Department.
Addressing Mental Health in Healthcare
Mental health among healthcare providers is a critical aspect of public health. By evaluating the current awareness and services available, UDM hopes to identify gaps in the mental health system and offer recommendations for improvement. “Mental health is essential for both patients and providers,” said Dr. Carlos-Tria. “By ensuring that our healthcare workers are mentally healthy and informed, we can significantly improve the quality of care they deliver.”
The research will assess not only the general knowledge of mental health issues but also the accessibility and effectiveness of mental health services available to healthcare professionals in Manila. This project is expected to pave the way for more robust mental health services tailored to the needs of those on the frontlines of healthcare.
Collaboration for Greater Impact
This research initiative is supported by the City Health Department, highlighting the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and government agencies in addressing public health challenges. UDM’s commitment to mental health reflects its broader mission to support well-being through evidence-based programs and policies that directly benefit the community.
By aligning its research with SDG 3, UDM is contributing to the broader goal of ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all, particularly within the critical sector of healthcare.
Looking Ahead
The results of the “Mind Matters” research project will not only shape the mental health programs within the healthcare system in Manila but also serve as a model for similar initiatives across the country. UDM’s proactive approach to mental health research demonstrates the university’s leadership in addressing one of the most pressing public health issues of our time.
