On February 28, 2024, Universidad de Manila (UDM) took a significant step towards promoting
fair labor practices by ensuring that all outsourced employees, including security and janitorial
personnel, receive the same rights and benefits as those directly hired by the university. This
initiative, which reflects UDM’s deep commitment to social responsibility, aligns with
Sustainable Development Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth.
The signing of contracts between UDM and service providers Prime Citadel and ALERT,
binding both parties to uphold these ethical labor practices, marked the event. The contracts,
which will govern services from March to December 31, 2024, were signed in the presence of
key figures, including UDM President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos Tria, Atty. Marlon Lacson,
Secretary to the Mayor, and Hon. Maria Sheilah “Honey” H. Lacuna–Pangan, M.D., FPDS, the
City Mayor of Manila.
This bold move by UDM sets a powerful example for other institutions, demonstrating a strong
commitment to fair labor practices and the welfare of all employees.
