On July 3, 2024, the Universidad de Manila (UDM) took a significant step towards poverty alleviation by hosting the Pre-Deployment Orientation for the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Cash-for-Work Program at the UDM Covered Court. This event, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) – No Poverty, aimed to equip 418 UDM college students with the necessary information and tools to participate in this impactful program.
The orientation was attended by key figures, including Florentino Y. Loyola, Jr., Assistant Secretary for Specialized Programs at DSWD, and Loida J. Primavera, the UDM Focal Person, alongside 14 UDM Committee Members and six DSWD representatives. These leaders emphasized the importance of the Cash-for-Work Program, which is part of the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan – Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) initiative.
The program provides a short-term targeted intervention for recent college graduates and students from economically disadvantaged or vulnerable communities. It offers these beneficiaries an opportunity to address their immediate basic needs while gaining valuable work experience. Each participant is eligible to render up to 90 workdays in their assigned areas, contributing to their community’s development while receiving financial support.
UDM has been identified as one of the State/Local Universities and Colleges (SUCs) participating in this initiative, with a total grant allocation of Php 19,215,000. This funding will support 400 beneficiaries, reflecting UDM’s commitment to providing practical solutions to poverty and empowering its students to make a positive impact in their communities.
The successful implementation of this program not only offers immediate financial relief to students but also reinforces UDM’s role in fostering social responsibility and community engagement among its students. By participating in the Cash-for-Work Program, these students are actively contributing to the fight against poverty, gaining work experience, and making a tangible difference in their communities.
