In a groundbreaking move, the University of Manila has unveiled a new policy under the
University Code that emphasizes robust community engagement and partnership. This policy is set to redefine university–community relations by highlighting the pivotal role of the University Board of Regents in fostering local collaborations and addressing community needs.
The policy outlines several key provisions. Firstly, it empowers the University Board of Regents as the primary policy–making body, dedicated to advancing the City of Manila’s development through community partnerships. It also promotes participative decision–making by encouraging the inclusion of local stakeholders in policy formulation and decision–making processes. To enhance educational opportunities and community development, the policy advocates for the establishment of academic linkages with both public and private entities. Furthermore, it institutionalizes research and outreach programs aimed at addressing local challenges and promoting sustainable solutions. The policy also facilitates close coordination with the Manila City Council to support community–based educational initiatives and policy recommendations.
Additionally, the Center for University Extension Services has introduced stringent criteria for selecting partner communities. This structured approach ensures that chosen communities align with the university’s objectives and address local needs, ultimately fostering sustainable development and maximizing the positive impact of collaborative efforts.
