Manila, Philippines – The Universidad de Manila (UDM) has forged a transformative partnership with the Global Peace Foundation Philippines (GPF-P), a renowned NGO dedicated to empowering Filipino communities through sustainability and peacebuilding initiatives. This collaboration is set to revolutionize UDM’s National Service Training Program (NSTP) by integrating peace education, sustainability, and community development into the curriculum, equipping students to be proactive agents of positive change.
The collaboration kicked off with extensive training sessions for NSTP Educators and Implementers. The training, provided by the Global Peace Foundation Philippines, focuses on embedding peace education, sustainability principles, and community development strategies into the NSTP modules. These sessions ensure that educators are well-equipped to deliver a curriculum that not only educates but also inspires social responsibility and global citizenship.
“We are excited to partner with the Global Peace Foundation to elevate our NSTP program,” said Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria, UDM President. “This collaboration will empower our students to become responsible citizens who contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future. By incorporating GPF-P’s expertise, we will equip our students with the knowledge and skills to tackle pressing social and environmental challenges.”
The revamped NSTP curriculum will focus on four key areas:
1. Peace Education: Students will learn about value-based approaches to peacebuilding, transforming them into active agents of peaceful community development. The curriculum will emphasize the role of education in fostering good relationships and creating peaceful societies.
2. Sustainability: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of environmental issues and sustainable practices. They will learn how their actions can contribute to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), understanding the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental factors.
3. Community Development: Engaging in community-based projects, students will address local needs while promoting social inclusion. They will explore participatory approaches to development, empowering communities to take ownership of their progress and ensuring long-term sustainability.
4. Social Responsibility: The curriculum will instill a strong sense of civic duty and social responsibility in students. They will explore ethical decision-making, human rights, and the importance of contributing to a just and equitable society.
“This partnership is a testament to the shared commitment of Universidad de Manila and the Global Peace Foundation Philippines to fostering a more sustainable and peaceful world,” said GPF-P Executive Director, Leonardo T. Faustino. “We believe that by equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to address global challenges, we can create a brighter future for all.”
The enhanced NSTP curriculum is set to be implemented in the 2024-2025 school year, and UDM is confident that this initiative will empower students to become active contributors to a more sustainable, just, and peaceful society.
