Manila, Philippines – In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) – “Gender Equality,” Universidad De Manila (UDM) has introduced a comprehensive paternity policy designed to support women’s participation in the workforce and education by ensuring that non-gestational parents can actively participate in childcare duties. This policy promotes shared parental responsibilities, fostering a more equitable environment for both parents and ensuring that women can pursue their academic and professional goals without the sole burden of childcare.
UDM’s paternity policy grants non-gestational parents the opportunity to take time off for the care of their newborns, supporting their active involvement in the early stages of parenting. This initiative ensures that caregiving duties are shared, reducing the pressure on women and allowing them to maintain a balance between family responsibilities and career or educational pursuits.
UDM President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria emphasized the importance of this policy, stating, “Gender equality is not just about providing opportunities for women—it’s about ensuring that both parents are supported in their roles. Our paternity policy is a step toward achieving true equality by encouraging shared responsibilities at home and promoting a more balanced approach to parenting.”
By implementing this paternity policy, UDM demonstrates its commitment to promoting gender equality and creating an inclusive environment where all parents, regardless of gender, are supported in balancing family and professional life. This policy is part of UDM’s broader efforts to foster a culture of inclusivity, equality, and support for all members of the university community.
