Manila, Philippines – In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), “Gender Equality,” Universidad De Manila (UDM) is taking proactive steps to encourage women to apply for programs where they are traditionally underrepresented. Through targeted orientation sessions during the enrollment period, UDM aims to increase female participation in fields such as criminology, law, public administration, economics, and information technology.
This initiative, spearheaded by UDM’s College of Criminal Justice, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Technology, in partnership with the Gender and Development Office (GAD), highlights the university’s dedication to breaking down gender barriers in education. The orientation sessions provide women with information, encouragement, and support to pursue academic programs where they have historically been underrepresented, ensuring that they are empowered to enter and succeed in these fields.
Empowering Women in Underrepresented Fields
The orientations focus on showcasing the opportunities and career pathways available to women in these fields, helping to dispel myths and challenges associated with gender disparity in certain academic disciplines. As a result, UDM has seen an increase in the number of women enrolled in criminology, economics, and information technology programs, among others.
UDM President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Encouraging women to pursue fields where they are underrepresented is a crucial step in advancing gender equality. By providing them with the necessary support and resources, we are creating a more inclusive and equitable academic environment.”
A Step Toward Gender Equality
This program not only increases women’s representation in underrepresented subjects but also contributes to the broader mission of SDG 5, ensuring that women have equal access to educational opportunities in all fields. By breaking gender stereotypes and promoting diversity in education, UDM is helping create a future where women are empowered to excel in any discipline they choose.
Looking Ahead
As UDM continues to promote gender equality, the university remains committed to providing women with the resources and encouragement they need to pursue careers in underrepresented fields. This initiative is expected to foster long-term social and economic benefits by ensuring that women are fully represented in all areas of study.
