Universidad De Manila (UDM) continues its commitment to fostering an informed student body by conducting an annual sustainability literacy assessment, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 17 (SDG 17) – “Partnerships for the Goals.” Through this comprehensive evaluation, administered by the University Testing Office and various academic departments, UDM ensures that students not only gain knowledge about sustainability but also understand its critical importance to global progress.
The annual assessment, developed in collaboration with sustainability experts, measures students’ awareness and understanding of sustainability principles across environmental, social, and economic domains. With a curriculum that increasingly emphasizes these topics, UDM prepares students to engage with and respond to global sustainability challenges, empowering them to make responsible, informed choices in their careers and communities.
Building Sustainable Knowledge for Future Generations
UDM President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “Sustainability is an essential part of global citizenship. By assessing our students’ literacy in this area, we are providing them with a foundation to actively participate in and promote sustainable practices, contributing to the collective mission of building a more equitable and responsible society.”
Advancing SDG 17 Through Informed Education
UDM’s literacy assessment reinforces the university’s commitment to SDG 17, which emphasizes the need for strong partnerships in tackling global challenges. By focusing on sustainability education, UDM equips students to engage with key issues and fosters a community of well-informed individuals ready to support and lead sustainability efforts locally and globally.
Empowering Students as Advocates for Change
Through the assessment, students gain a greater understanding of critical issues such as climate action, resource management, and social equity. By identifying strengths and areas for improvement in students’ sustainability knowledge, UDM adapts its educational programs to ensure that graduates leave with the insights needed to address real-world problems effectively.
A Model for Sustainability Education
UDM’s initiative serves as an example for educational institutions aiming to incorporate sustainability literacy into their curricula. By making sustainability a core component of the student experience, UDM demonstrates its commitment to preparing the next generation of leaders to promote sustainability in their communities, professions, and beyond.
The annual sustainability literacy assessment reinforces UDM’s role as a forward-thinking institution that values inclusivity, responsibility, and collaboration, ensuring that students are prepared to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development and global partnerships.
