December 2023 — Universidad De Manila, Manila, Philippines
In an inspiring conclusion to the 2023 academic year, the Universidad De Manila (UDM) celebrated a record number of graduates, with 2,438 students successfully completing their programs across multiple disciplines. This achievement aligns closely with the university’s dedication to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The breakdown of graduates highlights UDM’s strength in a variety of fields, with notable increases across the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business Administration, College of Education, and College of Criminal Justice. Key accomplishments include a 72% increase in BS Criminology graduates within the College of Criminal Justice and a 39% rise in graduates from the Bachelor of Technical-Vocational Teacher Education (BTVTE) programs in areas such as automotive, computer, electronics, and hotel and restaurant management, underscoring UDM’s commitment to fostering employability and skill-based education.
Commitment to Gender Equality and Education for All
Reflecting its commitment to SDG 5, UDM reported a strong representation of women among the graduating class, particularly within traditionally underrepresented fields. Programs in STEM, public administration, and social work saw increased female enrollment and completion rates, a testament to the university’s active support for gender equality in academic and career opportunities.
Advancing Health and Social Sciences
The College of Health Sciences celebrated a notable number of graduates in critical fields such as nursing and physical therapy, contributing skilled professionals to the healthcare sector, an essential element of SDG 3. Similarly, graduates from psychology, political science, and public administration programs are poised to impact the broader fields of social services and public health, advancing well-being and societal support systems.
A Model for Inclusive Education and Economic Growth
UDM’s impressive graduation numbers contribute to the goals of SDG 4 and SDG 8 by promoting quality education and supporting pathways to economic independence. UDM President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria remarked, “Our 2023 graduates represent the future workforce of the Philippines. UDM remains dedicated to providing inclusive, high-quality education that empowers students to drive positive change and strengthen their communities.”
This year’s graduation data underscores UDM’s role as a leader in educational inclusivity, supporting students from diverse backgrounds and promoting sustainable development within Manila and beyond.
