A Colorful Journey of Learning and Leadership: Reflecting on the University Identity Course
Crispel P. Nacion, a BS Hospitality Management student, shares how the University Identity Course (UID) has shaped her understanding of Universidad de Manila’s Core Values—E.Q.U.A.L.: Ethics and Integrity, Quality and Excellence, Unity and Collaboration, Achievement and Passion, and Leadership and Innovation. For Crispel, the course was more than an academic requirement; it was a transformative journey that instilled principles guiding both personal success and a commitment to helping others.
Crispel emphasizes that students who embrace and apply the E.Q.U.A.L. values are better equipped to face life’s challenges. “Core values are not just for school; they’re a mindset for daily living, helping us become good individuals, effective leaders, and active members of the community,” she shares. She views the principles as a pathway to wise decision-making and holistic growth.
For Crispel, Ethics and Integrity resonate the most. “It’s easy to lose direction when no one is watching,” she reflects. She learned that consistently choosing what is right and truthful, even in minor decisions, leads to lifelong success. Quoting Aristotle, she adds, “We are what we repeatedly do, so excellence is not an act but a habit.” This perspective drives her to uphold honesty and moral courage in her journey.
Crispel’s approach to her studies exemplifies the value of Quality and Excellence. “I give my best effort in every project, not just to meet deadlines but to assess my strengths and weaknesses,” she explains. This mindset motivates her to continually improve herself, preparing for future challenges.
The lessons on Unity and Collaboration deeply influenced Crispel’s perspective on teamwork and community. “Our professors gave us activities that emphasized the importance of working together. I realized success is not about personal achievements but about being helpful and open to others’ ideas,” she says. This value has strengthened her relationships with classmates, family, and her community, teaching her the importance of cooperation and respectful feedback.
For Crispel, success is not merely about achieving results but about valuing every step of the process. “The journey matters as much as the destination,” she concludes. The lessons from UID have equipped her with the mindset to face challenges with integrity, pursue excellence, and work collaboratively, ensuring she is prepared for both personal and professional success.
The University Identity Course has truly left a lasting impact on Crispel’s life, demonstrating the transformative power of values-based education in shaping ethical leaders and responsible citizens.
