UDM 2023 Freshmen Orientation Launches Empowering Women’s Mentoring Programs
September 9, 2023— Universidad De Manila, Philippines
From September 6 to 9, 2023, the Universidad de Manila (UDM) warmly welcomed its new
cohort of first–year students with the annual Freshmen Orientation held at Palma Hall. This
year’s orientation placed a special emphasis on gender equality through the introduction
of women’s mentoring schemes, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) –
Gender Equality.
Organized by the Office of Student Services and Development, the five–day event featured
a series of tailored sessions for each college, accommodating the diverse number of new
enrollments. Attendees were guided by all College Deans and College Secretaries,
alongside Heads of Academic Support offices, who provided comprehensive overviews of
academic policies, available services, and resources to ensure that incoming students are
well–prepared for their academic journey.
A standout feature of the 2023 orientation was the launch of women’s mentoring schemes.
These programs are designed to support female freshmen by pairing them with
experienced mentors from various disciplines, including Teacher Education, Social Work,
Psychology, and Business Administration. The mentors offer invaluable guidance, fostering
academic excellence and personal growth, and helping to create a nurturing and
supportive environment for women at UDM.
Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos–Tria, UDM President, emphasized the importance of these mentoring
schemes in promoting an inclusive and equitable academic community. “By providing
dedicated support for our female students, we are not only advancing gender equality but
also empowering our women to achieve their full potential,” she stated.
The introduction of women’s mentoring schemes is a testament to UDM’s ongoing
commitment to gender equality, ensuring that all students, particularly women, have the
necessary support to thrive academically and personally. This initiative is part of UDM’s
broader strategy to create an inclusive educational environment where every student is
valued and empowered to succeed.
