On Saturday, September 16, 2023, the City of Manila made a powerful statement in environmental stewardship by actively participating in the 38th International Coastal Clean-up Day. The event took place at Baseco Beach, with Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan leading the charge in clearing the beach of debris alongside Fifth District Representative Irwin Tieng and Department of Public Services Officer-in-Charge Kayle Nicole Amurao.
The clean-up effort garnered significant support, with messages of encouragement delivered by Atty. Juan Lorenzo Tañada, Director for Corporate and Regulatory Affairs at Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, and Mr. Gilbert Gonzales, OIC Assistant Secretary for Field Operations in Luzon and Visayas at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The event saw a remarkable turnout, with 44 organizations and a total of 3,814 volunteers coming together early Saturday morning to restore the beauty of Baseco Beach. This collective action is a testament to the city’s dedication to preserving its coastal areas and raising awareness about the importance of maintaining clean and healthy marine environments.
The City of Manila’s participation in this global initiative not only highlights its commitment to environmental sustainability but also strengthens the community’s resolve to protect its natural resources for future generations.
