In a strategic move to expand international collaborations, key officials from Universidad de Manila (UDM) successfully conducted a benchmarking visit to St. Petersburg State University on October 18-19, 2024. Led by Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria, University President, the delegation included Dr. Ronald A. Herrera, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Mr. Jeffrey Litan, Vice President for Controllership; and Mr. Manfredo A. Marcellano, Vice President for Administration. This visit was facilitated by the UDM University Research Extension, Linkages and International Affairs, emphasizing the university’s commitment to expanding global partnerships.
The UDM officials were warmly welcomed by Sergey Andryushin, Vice-Rector for International Affairs of St. Petersburg State University. His heartfelt reception set the tone for the productive discussions that followed, focusing on building sustainable collaborations and advancing academic innovation.
Benchmarking Events on October 18, 2024
The delegation participated in key events during the Dialogue of Rectors: How Artificial Intelligence is Reshaping the Future of Universities and Higher Education, held at St. Petersburg State University. The day’s sessions focused on emerging technologies and their impact on the future of higher education.
Some notable activities UDM officials attended include:
- 10:00 AM – 11:45 AM: Plenary Session – Discussions on how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the structure and roles within higher education institutions, led by global academic experts.
- 12:00 PM – 1:15 PM: Continued Plenary Session on AI’s influence on universities and educational systems.
- 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM: Discussion: ‘How and What Should We Teach: Skills for the Present and the Future’ – A deep dive into essential skills for future generations and how universities can adapt their teaching methodologies.
- 4:30 PM – 5:40 PM: Discussion: ‘Philosophy of AI: Does a Human Still Need a Human?’ – An exploration of the ethical dimensions of AI, including its impact on human interaction in the educational sphere.
These sessions provided UDM officials with a wealth of knowledge on technological advancements in higher education, equipping them with insights to drive innovation at UDM.
MOU Signing on October 19, 2024
The second day of the visit was highlighted by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between UDM and St. Petersburg State University, along with other leading universities. The signing, held at the historic Petrovsky Hall, was a milestone event that cemented a partnership aimed at fostering academic cooperation, research collaborations, and the integration of artificial intelligence in educational processes.
In his remarks, Sergey Andryushin expressed enthusiasm for the new collaboration, emphasizing that partnerships like this are crucial for sharing knowledge and resources across borders. “We are delighted to welcome Universidad de Manila to our international network of partners. Together, we can shape the future of education, leveraging AI and other emerging technologies to benefit both our institutions,” Andryushin said.
Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria shared her excitement about the new opportunities this partnership will bring to UDM. “This agreement is a testament to our commitment to global academic excellence. By fostering international collaborations, we ensure that our students and faculty can engage with global trends and innovations,” she stated.
Dr. Ronald A. Herrera added that the partnership would enhance UDM’s academic offerings. “The knowledge and strategies gained through this collaboration will help us elevate our academic programs, ensuring that UDM remains at the forefront of educational advancements.”
