The Universidad de Manila (UDM), in collaboration with its College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and College of Engineering and Technology (CET), successfully hosted the Basic Barangay Governance Training Program on November 17, 2023, at Barangay 720, Sta. Ana, Manila. The event aimed to enhance the governance skills of newly–elected Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials by equipping them with practical knowledge in public administration. Professors from UDM led the training sessions, with Prof. Jennelyn Huertas discussing Basic Barangay Governance, Prof. George Quiambao covering Barangay Resolution Making, and Prof. Ronald Fernandez presenting on Data Privacy. The program was spearheaded by Dr. Noami Solano, Dean of CAS, with the support of university leaders such as Dr. Manuel Richard Martinez, Maricar Caliliw, and Prof. Rosalie Catu. Student leaders from both CAS and CET also played an active role in the event’s organization and success.
With ten newly–elected officials in attendance, the seminar focused on providing essential
insights into the roles and responsibilities necessary for effective governance. The program emphasized the importance of transparency, informed decision–making, and the protection of sensitive information, especially in the context of data privacy. By offering this capacity–building initiative, UDM reaffirmed its commitment to community outreach and public service, contributing to the development of local governance. Moreover, the university has expanded its efforts in local governance education by offering an Associate in Barangay Governance degree, further nurturing future leaders in the field. The first commencement ceremony for this degree took place on August 9, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the university’s educational initiatives. Through these efforts, UDM continues to demonstrate its dedication to fostering effective governance and leadership within local communities, aligning with SDG 16.3.2 on policy and lawmakers outreach.
