In a significant step toward fostering educational development in the community, the
College of Education at Universidad de Manila successfully launched its Numeracy and
Literacy Extension Program in early 2023. The initiative, which aims to enhance the basic
skills of young learners, has already made a positive impact on 70 pupils enrolled in the
barangay’s daycare center.
The program, led by the College of Education, focuses on improving the numeracy and
literacy skills of elementary–aged children in Barangay 790. Over the course of the year,
students from various majors within the College of Education volunteered their time and
expertise, working closely with the young learners during weekend tutoring sessions.
Dr. Amalfi B. Tabin Jr., Dean of the College of Education, emphasized the importance of the
program, stating, “Education is the cornerstone of a thriving community. By launching this
program, we aim to provide these children with the foundational skills they need to
succeed academically and beyond. Our student volunteers are not only gaining valuable
teaching experience but also contributing to a greater cause—uplifting our local
community.”
The Numeracy and Literacy Extension Program involves a comprehensive approach to
learning, with university volunteers tailoring their lessons to the individual needs of the
pupils. The children are engaged in interactive reading and writing activities, as well as fun,
hands–on math exercises designed to build their confidence in these critical areas.
“This program has been a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to the community while
applying what we’ve learned in our courses,” said Ana Lopez, a third–year Education major
specializing in Early Childhood Education. “Seeing the children progress and grow more
confident in their abilities is incredibly rewarding.”
Parents and community members have also expressed their gratitude for the program,
noting the significant improvements they’ve observed in their children’s academic abilities.
“My child has become more interested in reading and can solve basic math problems with
much more ease now,” said one parent. “We are very thankful to the university and the
volunteers for their dedication and support.”
The program also includes workshops for parents, providing them with the tools and
strategies needed to support their children’s learning at home. This holistic approach ensures that the benefits of the program extend beyond the classroom, creating a
supportive environment for continued learning.
As the Numeracy and Literacy Extension Program continues to thrive, plans are already in
motion to expand its reach and involve more students from the College of Education. The
program’s success underscores the importance of community collaboration and the
transformative power of education.
The College of Education at Universidad de Manila remains committed to its mission of
empowering communities through education, and the Numeracy and Literacy Extension
Program stands as a testament to that commitment. The program not only benefits the
children of Barangay 790 but also enriches the educational experience of the university’s
future educators, fostering a culture of service and learning.
