MANILA, PHILIPPINES – August 10, 2024 – Universidad de Manila (UDM) marked a significant step in community empowerment as it celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of its Associate in Barangay Governance program. The commencement ceremony, held yesterday at UDM Palma Hall under the theme “Empower Your Community Leadership Journey,” highlighted the university’s dedication to enhancing local governance across Manila.
This pioneering program, a collaborative effort between UDM, the Department of the Interior and Local Government-Manila Field Office, and the Manila Barangay Bureau, is designed to equip future barangay leaders with essential governance skills and knowledge.
“This program transcends education; it’s about empowering our communities,” said Mayor Honey Lacuna, who was present at the event alongside Vice Mayor Yul Servo. “By investing in our barangay leaders, we are laying the groundwork for a brighter future in Manila.”
The 15 graduates, representing various barangays throughout the city, completed a comprehensive curriculum that included barangay governance structures, community development planning, financial management, conflict resolution, and sustainable development practices.
“We are confident that these graduates will be key drivers of positive change within their communities,” remarked Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria, UDM President. “They now have the tools to lead community initiatives, advocate for their constituents, and promote sustainable practices.”
The ceremony not only celebrated the achievements of the graduates but also underscored the program’s success, serving as a catalyst for future initiatives aimed at strengthening barangay governance and promoting sustainable development in Manila.
