On June 16, 2022, the Universidad de Manila (UDM) held a groundbreaking symposium at
Luneta Park’s Open Auditorium, centered around the SOGIE Bill and Manila Ordinance No.
8695, also known as the Manila LGBTQIA+ Protection Ordinance of 2020. This event,
aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) – Gender Equality, focused on non–
discrimination policies for transgender individuals and fostering a more inclusive
community.
Organized in collaboration with the City of Manila GAD Consultant, Ms. Shiela Ferrer, the
symposium brought together 392 city employees, barangay officials, and 51 UDM student
leaders. UDM President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos–Tria welcomed the attendees, and Manila
City Councilor Joel “JTV” Villanueva shared an inspirational message via recorded video.
Hosted by Mr. Emmanuel Gatdula, the event featured key speakers like Ms. Ma. Cristina
Cristobal, who discussed the SOGIE Bill and its significance, and Prof. Voltaire Perales,
who tackled the provisions of Manila Ordinance No. 8695.
The symposium emphasized the importance of raising awareness about LGBTQIA+ rights
and protections, encouraging inclusivity, understanding, and acceptance within society.
By bringing attention to the diverse experiences within the LGBTQIA+ community, UDM
continues its efforts to build a more equitable, compassionate, and supportive
environment for all individuals.
