On April 1, 2022, the Universidad de Manila (UDM) made a significant step towards
promoting inclusivity and equality by hosting the event “UDM LGBTQIA+: Building Paths for
Unity in a Diverse Community” at the UDM Library. Aligned with Sustainable Development
Goal 5 (SDG 5) – Gender Equality, the event focused on non–discrimination policies for
transgender individuals and the broader LGBTQIA+ community.
Organized by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and the Gender and Development (GAD)
office, the public consultation centered around the implementation of Manila City
Ordinance No. 8695, the Manila LGBTQIA+ Protection Ordinance of 2020. The consultation
involved key figures such as Dr. Virginia I. Berganio, Dean of OSA, Dr. Rhodora Bernal,
Director of GAD, and Mr. Karl G. Villena, Adviser of BAHAGHARI, along with LGBTQIA+
student leaders, faculty, and community members.
The discussions addressed challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ students, including
discrimination and the need for gender–neutral facilities on campus. In response, UDM
committed to converting one of its restrooms into a gender–neutral space and officially
recognizing BAHAGHARI, the LGBTQIA+ student organization, in August 2022. These efforts
reflect UDM’s dedication to fostering an inclusive environment that respects gender
identity and diversity.
This initiative highlights UDM’s commitment to upholding non–discrimination policies and
creating a supportive academic community for all students.
