By: Leila R. Gano, PhD. EdD.
Being a student at the Universidad de Manila often means juggling academics, personal responsibilities, and financial challenges—a balancing act that can feel overwhelming at times. For many, worrying about basic needs, such as where the next meal will come from, adds a heavy burden to an already demanding life. Fortunately, the UDM CARES Student Pantry and Soup Kitchen has become a beacon of hope and a vital lifeline for countless students, offering support that extends far beyond providing food.
UDM CARES ensures that students have access to nutritious meals and snacks, which are essential for staying focused and energized during long days filled with classes and academic responsibilities. As one student shared, “Without this support, it would be much harder for us to maintain the energy and concentration required to excel in our studies.” These meals are more than sustenance—they are a crucial part of ensuring that students can thrive academically, without being held back by hunger or fatigue.
Yet, the impact of UDM CARES reaches beyond physical nourishment. It alleviates the stress and anxiety that often accompany financial hardship. Knowing there is a place to turn for help brings a sense of relief and security, enabling students to focus more on their academic and personal growth.
For students, UDM CARES is a testament to the university’s genuine commitment to their holistic well-being. It creates an environment of support and encouragement, reminding them that they are not alone in their struggles. “UDM CARES motivates us to keep moving forward,” one student remarked. “It shows us that our university truly cares—not just about our academic success but about our overall welfare as human beings.”
Through programs like UDM CARES, the Universidad de Manila continues to uplift its students, reinforcing its mission of fostering sustainable communities and empowering future leaders.
