Manila, Philippines – In a move to further support Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), “Good Health and Well-being,” Universidad De Manila (UDM) has reiterated and expanded its No Smoking Policy to include a total ban on both tobacco and non-tobacco cigarette products. The expanded policy, announced by UDM President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria, now covers the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and electronic non-nicotine delivery systems (ENNDS), including e-cigarettes, vapes, vape pens, and Juul, among others.
This comprehensive policy applies to all university officials, faculty, staff, students, and visitors, and will be strictly enforced across all UDM campuses, buildings, and even parked cars within university property. UDM’s goal is to create a healthier environment for the entire community by eliminating exposure to harmful substances associated with smoking and vaping.
A Commitment to Health and Well-being
Dr. Carlos-Tria emphasized that this policy is not just a regulation but part of a broader commitment to promoting good health and well-being. “This expanded no-smoking policy aligns with our dedication to ensuring a healthy and safe environment for all members of our community,” she stated. “We must all do our part to support this initiative, which directly impacts the quality of life on campus.”
The total ban on smoking is a crucial step in reducing the risks associated with both smoking and second-hand exposure, particularly within a university setting where students and staff spend a significant amount of time. The expansion of the policy to include electronic cigarettes reflects UDM’s awareness of the growing health concerns related to vaping.
Enforcement and Compliance
The university has made it clear that the No Smoking Policy will be strictly enforced, with disciplinary actions in place for violators. Both students and employees who do not comply will face appropriate disciplinary measures according to the guidelines set in the Student Handbook and the Employee Code of Discipline. Visitors, suppliers, contractors, and couriers are also expected to adhere to the ban when on UDM property.
Dr. Carlos-Tria urged the university community to actively support the policy by reminding fellow community members and visitors of the total ban. The goal is to foster a collective effort toward maintaining a smoke-free environment that benefits everyone.
Aligning with SDG 3: A Healthier Future
This policy reflects UDM’s broader efforts to align with SDG 3, which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages. By eliminating smoking and vaping on campus, UDM is taking a proactive stance to protect the health of its community, reducing the risk of smoking-related illnesses and promoting a culture of wellness.
Moving Forward
As UDM continues to uphold its No Smoking Policy, it sets a standard for other institutions to follow in promoting health and well-being on their campuses. With strong enforcement and community support, this initiative will contribute to a safer and healthier environment for everyone at UDM.
