UDM C.A.R.E.S.: Professor Alistair Selorio’s Vision of Compassion and Sustainability
By: Leila R. Gano, PhD. EdD.
The Universidad de Manila (UDM) has become a beacon of hope for its students through the innovative UDM C.A.R.E.S. initiative—Crisis Aid, Relief, and Economic Security. At the heart of this program is its visionary leader, Professor Alistair Selorio, Director-General of UDM C.A.R.E.S., whose dedication and leadership have brought the program to life.
Professor Selorio shared the inspiration behind the initiative, explaining, “UDM C.A.R.E.S. was born out of the need to ensure that every student can access not just education but the basic necessities for survival. Many of our students face the daily challenge of attending class without proper meals, and we couldn’t stand idly by. This program embodies UDM’s commitment to delivering compassionate and sustainable solutions for its community.”
The program’s implementation was not without its challenges. According to Professor Selorio, mobilizing resources and ensuring the sustainability of the program required innovative solutions. “One of the biggest challenges was securing funding, but we overcame this by building strong partnerships with local government units, non-profits, and private donors. Sustainability was another key focus, and we addressed it by developing resource-monitoring systems and seeking feedback from the students we serve.”
The impact of UDM C.A.R.E.S. has been transformative. The initiative’s soup kitchen and student pantry have improved student attendance, health, and engagement. “Students who once struggled to focus in class due to hunger now have access to proper nutrition. This has strengthened our community and reinforced UDM’s reputation as a university that genuinely cares for its students,” Professor Selorio noted.
For Professor Selorio, UDM C.A.R.E.S. is more than just a project; it is a movement. “This program has fostered a culture of compassion and accountability within the university. It’s a reflection of UDM’s mission to create sustainable communities and empower individuals to reach their full potential.”
Under Professor Selorio’s leadership, UDM C.A.R.E.S. continues to grow, serving as a model for how universities can address societal challenges while transforming lives through education and care.
