Integrating Values-Based Education at Universidad de Manila: The University Identity (UID) Program Research
By: Dr. Leila R. Gano
A comprehensive study conducted by Dr. Ronald A. Herrera, Prof. Iserlohn Peter Lim, Dr. Leila R. Gano, and Ms. Dellgie Anne V. Pangan focused on Universidad de Manila’s University Identity (UID) Program, emphasizing values-based education across 16 diverse degree programs.
The research highlights how the UID Program embeds UDM’s Core Values—Ethics and Integrity, Quality and Excellence, Unity and Collaboration, Achievement and Passion, and Leadership and Innovation (E.Q.U.A.L.)—into the curriculum, effectively bridging theoretical knowledge and practical application. The UID Program comprises six specialized courses (UID 101 to UID 106), employing experiential learning methodologies such as community projects, leadership training, and reflective group activities to enhance students’ critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and civic responsibility.
Supported by theoretical frameworks including Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development, Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, and Social Capital Theory, the study identifies key success factors while acknowledging challenges like resource constraints and variable student engagement. Adaptive strategies such as mentorship programs and inclusive resource provisions ensure program effectiveness and widespread participation. Ultimately, the research demonstrates that the UID Program successfully develops visionary, ethical leaders capable of addressing societal needs, positioning UDM as a leader in values-based education and a transformative force in higher education.
