Driving Core Values Through Education: Dr. Roberto Norberte and the University Identity Course
At the forefront of embedding the Universidad de Manila (UDM) core values into the educational experience is Dr. Roberto Norberte, Head of the General Education Department and a key figure in the implementation of the University Identity Course (UID). Classified under University Administration, Dr. Norberte ensures that this transformative course reaches its full potential in shaping the next generation of ethical and visionary leaders.
The Role of General Education in UID
“Our department ensures that the University Identity Course (UID) is seamlessly integrated into the curriculum and aligned with the university’s mission and core values,” shared Dr. Norberte. By focusing on a holistic approach, the General Education Department creates a foundation where academic excellence, ethical behavior, leadership, and civic responsibility intersect.
Dr. Norberte takes a hands-on role in supervising course development, providing faculty training, and continuously evaluating the course to keep it relevant and impactful. “It’s more than just a course; it’s a transformative experience that prepares students to make a meaningful impact in society,” he emphasized.
Measuring Success and Overcoming Challenges
The success of the UID program is gauged through various methods, including student feedback, performance-based assessments, and long-term tracking of graduate outcomes. Reflective essays and community projects are integral tools to measure how well students internalize and apply the E.Q.U.A.L. values in their lives.
Despite its successes, challenges remain. “One significant challenge is ensuring the course remains engaging and meaningful for a diverse student body,” Dr. Norberte explained. To address this, the department has adopted dynamic teaching strategies, such as case studies and experiential learning activities. Faculty development is also prioritized, with regular workshops ensuring that instructors deliver the course with passion and expertise.
Empowering Future Leaders
Under Dr. Norberte’s leadership, the UID program continues to empower UDM students to embrace their identity as ethical leaders and socially responsible citizens. By instilling the university’s core values in every aspect of the course, the program not only prepares students for professional success but also inspires them to contribute to the development of their communities.
“The UID program is not just about academic knowledge,” Dr. Norberte said. “It’s about cultivating the values and skills that our students need to lead with integrity and purpose.”
With leaders like Dr. Norberte at the helm, UDM is steadfast in its mission to nurture graduates who embody the E.Q.U.A.L. values and drive positive change in society.
