UDM C.A.R.E.S.: Empowering Students for Academic Success and Beyond
By: Leila R. Gano, PhD. EdD.
The Universidad de Manila’s UDM C.A.R.E.S. program has become a cornerstone in transforming the academic lives of its students. By addressing basic needs through its soup kitchen and student pantry, the initiative has created a profound ripple effect on student performance in the classroom.
Dr. Manuel Richard B. Martinez, the College Secretary of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) highlighted the program’s impact on academic engagement. “Students who used to struggle with focus are now more energetic and engaged in discussions. Hunger is no longer a barrier, and I’ve noticed significant improvements in their participation and enthusiasm for learning.” Dr. Martinez also emphasized how the program indirectly boosts academic achievements. “When basic needs are met, students can dedicate their energy to their studies, and the quality of their work reflects this positive change.”
Through UDM C.A.R.E.S., the university has successfully bridged the gap between addressing students’ immediate needs and empowering their academic and personal growth. The program is a testament to UDM’s mission of fostering sustainable communities and transforming lives, proving that a simple act of care can pave the way for lasting success.
