On August 7, 2024, during the 26th Commencement Exercises at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), President Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria underscored the importance of the Associate in Barangay Governance (ABG) Program in her President’s Report. Themed “UDM @29: A Legacy of Excellence,” the event served as a platform to showcase the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and leadership in community governance.
In her speech, Dr. Tria highlighted the creation of the ABG program as a groundbreaking initiative made possible through collaboration with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Barangay Bureau, and Liga ng mga Barangay. She emphasized that this program aligns with the university’s mission to empower future leaders and contribute to sustainable community development. “This initiative is a significant step in our mission to serve the community and empower future leaders who will shape the governance in the barangay,” she stated.
Dr. Tria elaborated on how the ABG program enhances the competencies of barangay leaders by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to address the unique challenges faced by their communities. The program focuses on ethical leadership, governance, fiscal management, and the use of digital tools, ensuring that barangay officials are well-prepared to drive positive change and uphold the values of transparency and accountability.
The recognition of the ABG program in the President’s Report reinforces its role as a vital tool for transforming local governance and highlights Universidad de Manila’s leadership in community-centric education. As UDM celebrates 29 years of excellence, the ABG program stands as a testament to the university’s enduring commitment to empowering communities and shaping a brighter future for grassroots governance.
