On July 24, 2024, the City of Manila launched the “Libreng Sakay” (Free Ride) initiative, benefiting students and employees of Universidad de Manila (UDM) as well as other city residents. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) – No Poverty, this initiative aims to support commuters facing transportation challenges, providing free rides during peak hours to alleviate their financial burdens and improve daily commutes.
Spearheaded by Mayor Maria Sheilah “Honey” Honrado Lacuna-Pangan and Vice Mayor John Marvin “Yul Servo” Cruz, the program deployed a total of 42 vehicles across Manila, courtesy of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO), Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB), and the Manila Police District (MPD). The fleet included pick-ups, transporters, a Mobile Command Unit, and a mobile clinic, ensuring passengers had access to safe and reliable transport during rush hours.
This initiative highlights the city’s commitment to providing immediate solutions for stranded passengers, many of whom are students and workers who rely on consistent transportation. By offering free rides, the city government is actively reducing the financial strain on its residents and supporting the well-being of UDM students and employees.
