On July 3, 2024, the College of Business Administration (CBA) at Universidad de Manila (UDM) launched a transformative Community Engagement Mentorship Program in a Barangay in Manila, aligning with the university’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) – No Poverty. This initiative brought together CBA students, faculty, Barangay volunteers, and residents to foster a culture of support, growth, and empowerment within both the university and the local community.
The mentorship program is designed to bridge the gap between academia and real-world experiences. Senior students and alumni provided guidance to underclassmen, offering academic advice, career insights, and personal development tips. This exchange of knowledge and experiences not only benefited the students but also had a profound impact on the Barangay residents, who were included in the mentorship network.
Through this initiative, UDM students are encouraged to take on leadership roles, demonstrate empathy, and engage in social responsibility. The program fosters a sense of solidarity, with mentors and mentees working together to uplift one another, building lasting relationships that extend beyond the classroom. By contributing to the development of their peers and the community, these students are actively participating in the fight against poverty, helping to create a more empowered and educated Manila.
This mentorship program exemplifies how education can be a powerful tool in poverty reduction, as it equips individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to improve their lives and contribute meaningfully to society. UDM continues to lead by example, demonstrating that community engagement is crucial in achieving sustainable development goals.
