In a significant stride toward promoting environmental sustainability and ecological awareness, the Universidad de Manila (UDM), in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), successfully launched “The Project O₂: A Tree Growing Initiative” on April 26, 2025. The activity took place at the UDM Lobby and Center Garden, where students, faculty, and university officials joined forces to plant numerous tree seedlings within the campus grounds.
The event was graced by Dr. Hiro V. Masuda, DENR Assistant Secretary for Human Resources and Sectoral Initiatives, alongside UDM’s top officials: Dr. Ronald A. Herrera (Vice President for Academic Affairs), Dr. Rodolfo V. Castillo Jr. (Vice President for Student Success and Support Services), Mr. Manfredo A. Marcellano (Vice President for Administration), Mr. Jeffrey F. Litan (Vice President for Comptrollership), and Dr. Virginia I. Berganio (Assistant Director of the Center for Micro-Credentials and Industry Training). Officers of the Society for the Advancement of Science Education (SASE), together with UDM students, faculty, and staff, also actively participated in this meaningful initiative.
“The Project O₂” underscores UDM’s commitment to nurturing a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable environment by emphasizing the crucial role of trees in improving air quality, supporting biodiversity, and mitigating the impacts of climate change. The initiative also integrates water-conscious planting practices, using drought-tolerant plants and landscape designs that minimize water usage—a practical approach that reflects environmental stewardship and sustainability in action.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 15: Life on Land, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities—this project demonstrates how local action can significantly contribute to global efforts for ecological balance and climate resilience.
Through “The Project O₂,” UDM continues to lead by example, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and collaboration among its academic community and partner institutions.
