The Universidad de Manila (UDM) proudly reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility by joining the 40th International Coastal Clean-Up held on September 20, 2025, at Baseco Beach, Brgy. 649, Port Area, Manila. Carrying the global theme “Clean Seas Against Climate Crisis,” the event brought together UDM Administrative Officials, Faculty, Staff, Personnel, and the National Service Training Program (NSTP) students for a meaningful day of service beyond the University walls.
The successful participation of UDM was spearheaded by Mr. Alistair B. Selorio, NSTP Director-General, with the strong support of Dr. Manuel Richard Martinez, Assistant Director, QUAD, and Dr. Vanessa Vargas-Martinez, Program Head of the BSEd Science Program. Their leadership ensured that the activity was well-organized, safe, and impactful for all participants.
Armed with gloves, trash bags, and a shared sense of purpose, the UDM Workforce and NSTP students worked hand-in-hand to collect and document marine debris, reducing shoreline litter and restoring the beauty of Baseco Beach. For the students, this was not just a community service activity but a hands-on learning experience that strengthened their sense of civic responsibility, leadership, and environmental awareness.
UDM’s participation directly contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by promoting cleaner and healthier communities, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by keeping urban spaces livable and resilient, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by reducing waste and fostering a culture of sustainability, SDG 13 (Climate Action) by actively participating in efforts to combat the climate crisis, and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by protecting marine ecosystems and biodiversity. This connection to the SDGs demonstrates that UDM’s advocacy goes beyond campus activities and is part of a global call for collective action.
This event was more than a clean-up drive—it was a declaration of UDM’s role as a champion of climate action and sustainability. The combined efforts of the UDM community exemplified the University’s mission to shape globally competent and socially responsible graduates who are ready to take on environmental challenges and inspire others to act.
