The Scholars’ English Circle promotes language proficiency, communication excellence, and lifelong learning through an educational initiative featuring experienced English educator Mervin M. Culibar.
MANILA, Philippines — Language is more than a tool for communication—it is a gateway to knowledge, opportunity, and meaningful human connection. Recognizing the importance of strong communication skills in academic and professional success, the Universidad de Manila (UDM), through its Scholars’ English Circle, introduced its English Proficiency Program to support the language development of aspiring educators.
The initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to strengthening English language proficiency and encouraging students to become confident, competent, and effective communicators.
The program’s launch was scheduled for October 4, 2025, featuring Mr. Mervin M. Culibar, an experienced English educator and campus journalism mentor.
Strengthening Language Competence for Academic and Professional Excellence
The English Proficiency Program aims to provide a meaningful learning opportunity for English major students seeking to strengthen their communication abilities and develop greater confidence in using the English language.
For aspiring educators, proficiency in English is particularly important, as effective communication supports classroom instruction, academic engagement, and the development of students’ literacy skills.
Through language-focused educational activities, the program seeks to encourage continuous improvement and promote the value of lifelong learning.
The initiative also emphasizes that mastery of language requires sustained practice, meaningful engagement, and a willingness to learn from experienced practitioners.
Learning from an Experienced Language Educator
A highlight of the program is the participation of Mr. Mervin M. Culibar, whose academic preparation and professional experience reflect a strong commitment to English language education.
Mr. Culibar earned his Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English and Master of Arts in Teaching–English Language Arts.
He previously served as an instructor at Universidad de Manila and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.
He continues to contribute to basic education as an English teacher and campus journalism mentor at Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School.
His professional background offers aspiring educators valuable perspectives on the practical applications of English language teaching and the importance of developing effective communication skills.
Inspiring the Next Generation of English Educators
The Scholars’ English Circle’s initiative underscores the importance of student-led academic activities in creating opportunities for professional growth.
By engaging experienced educators and promoting language enrichment, the organization demonstrates how student initiatives can complement formal academic instruction.
The program also reinforces the importance of communication competence in preparing future teachers to become effective facilitators of learning.
As students strengthen their language skills, they are better positioned to develop the confidence and professional competence needed to support learners in diverse educational environments.
Advancing Quality Education Through Language Development
The English Proficiency Program supports the broader objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
By promoting language proficiency and academic development, the initiative contributes to the preparation of future educators who can support quality learning experiences.
It also highlights the value of collaboration between student organizations and education professionals in strengthening opportunities for continuous learning.
Through initiatives such as the English Proficiency Program, UDM continues to encourage students to pursue academic excellence, professional readiness, and lifelong personal development.
At Universidad de Manila, every word learned builds confidence, every skill developed creates opportunity, and every empowered future educator becomes a catalyst for meaningful learning.
