On May 8, 2025, the Universidad De Manila (UDM) Main Campus transformed into a space of solidarity and care as the university launched “Universidad de Manila Cares”, a Soup Kitchen Pantry designed to support students experiencing financial distress.
The initiative provided freshly prepared meals to 400 college students, extending not just nourishment but also a sense of belonging and security within the academic community. The project was spearheaded by University President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria, University Registrar Loida J. Primavera, and NSTP Director Alistair B. Selorio, with the assistance of 25 committee members, including CSF staff and student volunteers.
More than a one-time relief effort, the Soup Kitchen Pantry embodies UDM’s ongoing commitment to SDG 1 – No Poverty, recognizing that student survival is a non-negotiable prerequisite to student success. For many scholars and working students balancing education with financial hardship, a hot meal can mean the difference between perseverance and dropout.
By institutionalizing welfare-oriented programs alongside academic services, UDM demonstrates that a truly pro-poor university does not stop at providing free tuition—it ensures that no student is left hungry while pursuing their degree.
The atmosphere on campus reflected both gratitude and renewed hope, proving that compassion is an essential pillar of educational equity.
