𝘚𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘭, 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘒𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢 – 𝘈𝘶𝘨𝘶𝘴𝘵 14, 2025 — In a significant step toward fostering global understanding and historical awareness, Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria, President of Universidad De Manila (UDM), met with Mr. Baek Seung-Joo, President of the War Memorial of Korea (WMK), to explore a potential partnership focused on peace education. The meeting, held in Seoul, represents an important milestone in UDM’s mission to integrate global perspectives into its educational programs and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The envisioned collaboration aims to create joint initiatives that will enhance students’ understanding of the Korean War’s historical significance and its lessons for contemporary peacebuilding efforts. Through educational exchanges, research collaborations, and the development of specialized modules on conflict resolution and reconciliation, the partnership intends to instill in students a deeper appreciation of the importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and cultural empathy in achieving lasting peace.
Dr. Tria emphasized that such cooperation transcends traditional academic boundaries by connecting historical remembrance with the practical demands of modern global citizenship. “Peace education must be both reflective and forward-looking,” she noted. “By learning from the past, we prepare our students to be advocates of justice, cooperation, and sustainable peace.”
For his part, Mr. Baek Seung-Joo expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with UDM, highlighting the War Memorial’s dedication to educating future generations on the value of peace and the human cost of conflict. He underscored that partnerships with academic institutions like UDM are vital in ensuring that peace education resonates with younger audiences across cultures.
The meeting not only laid the groundwork for academic and cultural exchange between the Philippines and South Korea but also reinforced UDM’s role as a globally engaged institution. By linking historical narratives with modern educational strategies, this initiative promises to contribute meaningfully to the cultivation of a more informed, empathetic, and peace-driven generation.
