In a practical move to promote health, sustainability, and social equity, Universidad De Manila (UDM) launched a campus initiative providing free and accessible drinking water through newly installed water dispensers in key university locations.
The program directly benefits UDM students, along with faculty and staff, by ensuring daily access to clean and safe hydration—a necessity often overlooked in higher education environments. For many students navigating financial challenges, especially those who walk long commutes or spend entire days on campus, free drinking water eliminates the recurring cost of bottled beverages, creating both economic relief and environmental impact.
Aligned with SDG 1 – No Poverty, the project functions as a micro-level poverty intervention, addressing one of the most basic but essential needs of the academic population. At the same time, it contributes to SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, proving that sustainability begins with accessible infrastructure.
By discouraging single-use plastic bottle consumption, the initiative also strengthens UDM’s stance on sustainable development and climate responsibility. Small daily actions—like refilling reusable bottles—now form part of the university’s culture.
This low-cost but high-impact effort demonstrates that student welfare is built not only on scholarships and lectures—but also on providing simple, life-supporting resources for everyday dignity. UDM continues to prove that a truly pro-people university invests in the well-being of its community at every level.
