UDM Ensures Access to Clean Drinking Water Through Campus-Wide Installation of Water Dispensers and Fountains
April 2024 | Universidad de Manila Premises
In its continuing mission to promote wellness, sustainability, and environmental responsibility, the Universidad de Manila (UDM), under the leadership of University President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria, has implemented the Provision of Water Dispenser and Drinking Fountain Project across the university campus. This initiative underscores UDM’s proactive commitment to ensuring that students, faculty, and staff have access to clean, safe, and free drinking water at all times.
Directed by Dr. Tria, the university’s Maintenance and Engineering Division (MED), headed by Engr. Jayson Valeroso, spearheaded the planning and installation of water dispensers and fountains in key campus areas. These facilities were strategically placed in high-traffic and easily accessible locations such as hallways, student centers, and faculty offices, allowing everyone within the university to stay properly hydrated throughout the day.
As part of the university’s sustainability and health initiatives, UDM provides free drinking water for students, staff, and visitors through the installation of drinking fountains and dispensers across the campus. This effort promotes inclusivity and ensures that hydration is never a privilege but a basic necessity available to all members of the university community.
The project was launched in response to growing concerns over extreme heat and its potential impact on the health and productivity of the UDM community. By ensuring consistent access to potable water, UDM safeguards the well-being of its stakeholders and reinforces its commitment to public health, environmental care, and community resilience.
More than addressing an immediate need, this project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation—by ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water for all. It also contributes to:
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by promoting hydration and preventing heat-related illnesses;
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through the creation of a healthier and more livable campus environment;
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, by reducing dependence on single-use plastic bottles; and
- SDG 13: Climate Action, by encouraging sustainable habits that minimize environmental impact.
Through this initiative, Universidad de Manila sets an example of how simple yet impactful actions can advance sustainability and improve community welfare. By prioritizing clean water access, UDM not only fosters health and safety but also strengthens its role as a university committed to the global goals for sustainable development.
