Beyond immediate health assistance, Project TUGON also served as an educational outreach program that advanced the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) framework. Nursing students and faculty volunteers conducted short health education sessions for local residents and families, focusing on hygiene practices, preventive care, and disaster preparedness.
Through these activities, UDM extended the reach of SDG-focused learning beyond the classroom, ensuring that knowledge about health, safety, and sustainability reached the wider community, including displaced residents affected by the fire. The program also encouraged peer learning and intergenerational exchange, where students, alumni, and local leaders worked together to strengthen public understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their relevance in daily life.
This initiative reinforces UDM’s commitment to community-based education, demonstrating how universities can serve as centers of both academic excellence and social transformation. By connecting theory with service, UDM continues to nurture student leaders who learn not only for the community but with the community—building a healthier, safer, and more sustainable Manila.
