Universidad de Manila and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources strengthen environmental stewardship through a collaborative tree-growing initiative.
MANILA, Philippines — Every tree planted represents a promise to future generations—a promise of cleaner air, greener spaces, and a more sustainable tomorrow. Turning this vision into meaningful action, the Universidad de Manila (UDM) partnered with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to implement Project O2: A Tree Growing Initiative on April 26, 2025, at the UDM campus.
The initiative brought together university officials, faculty members, staff, students, and DENR representatives in a collective effort to promote environmental awareness, ecological responsibility, and climate action.
Growing a Culture of Environmental Responsibility
Project O2 featured the planting of numerous seedlings across the university grounds, symbolizing the shared commitment of UDM and DENR to environmental protection and sustainable development.
The initiative demonstrated that environmental sustainability begins with concrete actions that encourage individuals and institutions to take responsibility for preserving natural resources.
Beyond tree planting, the activity provided an opportunity to strengthen environmental education and encourage participants to recognize their role in creating healthier and more sustainable communities.
An information-sharing session on proper tree-growing practices was facilitated by Mr. Frenz Carlo Balagas of DENR–NCR, providing participants with practical knowledge to support responsible planting and tree care.
Strengthening Partnerships for Sustainability
The initiative was supported by key representatives from DENR and UDM, highlighting the importance of institutional collaboration in advancing environmental sustainability.
Leading the DENR delegation was Dr. Hiro V. Masuda, Assistant Secretary for Human Resources and Sectoral Initiatives and a recipient of UDM’s Most Distinguished Alumni Award.
Representing UDM were Dr. Ronald A. Herrera, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Rodolfo V. Castillo Jr., Vice President for Student Success and Support Services; Mr. Manfredo A. Marcellano, Vice President for Administration; Mr. Jeffrey F. Litan, Vice President for Comptrollership; and Dr. Virginia I. Berganio, Assistant Director of the Center for Micro-Credentials and Industry Training.
The activity also involved the Society for the Advancement of Science Education (SASE), alongside UDM students, faculty members, and staff.
Their participation demonstrated how collaboration among government agencies, educational institutions, and academic organizations can translate sustainability commitments into meaningful environmental initiatives.
Turning Environmental Education into Action
Project O2 emphasized the importance of integrating environmental education with hands-on activities.
Through direct participation in tree growing, students were given opportunities to connect scientific knowledge with practical environmental stewardship.
The initiative also reinforced the university’s role in developing environmentally responsible citizens who recognize the long-term importance of protecting ecosystems and natural resources.
By creating opportunities for experiential learning, UDM continues to demonstrate that sustainability education extends beyond theoretical discussions and requires active participation.
Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals
Project O2 aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The partnership between UDM and DENR exemplifies the value of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability within educational institutions.
As UDM continues to strengthen its environmental initiatives, Project O2 serves as a meaningful reminder that sustainable development is a shared responsibility.
Through every seedling planted, Universidad de Manila nurtures not only greener spaces but also a generation committed to protecting the planet and preserving its resources for the future.
