In pursuit of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, the Universidad de Manila (UDM) has strengthened its efforts to equip students with practical work experience alongside academic learning. For the academic year 2024–2025, the University Career and Placement Office reported that 78.97% of full-time equivalent (FTE) students successfully engaged in work placements as part of their degree requirements.
This milestone reflects UDM’s strategic focus on ensuring that learners across disciplines gain hands-on, industry-relevant experience prior to graduation—bridging the gap between theory and practice, and enhancing employability in today’s competitive labor market.
The program covers a wide range of academic fields, with notable placement rates including:
- 100% participation from students in Political Science, Public Administration, Business Administration (Human Resource Development Management), Business Economics, and Education majors (English, General Science, Mathematics, Social Studies).
- High engagement levels in Psychology (80.95%), Social Work (91.67%), Information Technology (80.56%), and Marketing Management (87.50%).
- Emerging opportunities for programs like Criminology (68.49%), Physical Education (80%), Nursing (50%), and Physical Therapy (50%), where UDM continues to strengthen linkages with industry and community partners.
Overall, 199 out of 252 students participated in work placements, underscoring UDM’s proactive role in aligning higher education with workforce needs.
This initiative not only advances SDG target 8.2.7 on employment practices through student work placements but also contributes to lifelong learning and inclusive growth. By embedding practical training into academic pathways, UDM ensures that its graduates are not only knowledgeable but also prepared to thrive in real-world settings.
Through this achievement, the University reinforces its mission of uplifting lives through quality education—preparing visionary and ethical leaders who are equipped with both competence and experience to make a meaningful impact in society.
