As part of the College of Criminal Justice (CCJ) Week, the Universidad de Manila (UDM) conducted an Anti-Hazing Seminar in September 2025 at the College of Criminal Justice, reinforcing the University’s commitment to cultivating responsible and ethical criminologists. The event brought together faculty members, students, and local partners to raise awareness of the legal, moral, and social consequences of hazing—while honoring those who have suffered from such acts.
The seminar featured PSSg. Remcel E. Jugarap as the resource speaker, who delivered an insightful discussion on the realities of hazing, its criminal implications under the Anti-Hazing Law (Republic Act 11053), and the importance of promoting a culture of respect, brotherhood, and accountability. He urged students to foster camaraderie founded on trust and solidarity rather than violence and coercion.
Anchored on the theme, “The New Era of Criminology: Empowering Future Criminologists through Excellence, Fortitude, and Service,” the activity emphasized the vital role of criminology students as advocates of peace, justice, and strong institutions. It also highlighted their responsibility to uphold integrity and human rights in future law enforcement careers.
To further strengthen its anti-hazing advocacy, the University ensured participatory engagement by involving local stakeholders, including representatives from the local government, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations, in program planning and awareness initiatives. This collaborative approach fosters shared responsibility and reinforces the university’s transparency and inclusivity in addressing community and student welfare concerns. Through these participatory bodies, UDM provides meaningful mechanisms for stakeholders to engage in decision-making processes that enhance student safety and campus governance.
This initiative directly supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, underscoring UDM’s unwavering dedication to developing informed, empowered, and socially responsible future criminologists who will contribute to building a just, peaceful, and humane society.
