UDM student leaders strengthen financial literacy, responsible governance, and inter-university collaboration through national-level engagement.
MANILA, Philippines — Effective leadership is not simply about making decisions; it is about ensuring that every decision reflects accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship of resources. Embracing this principle, student leaders from the Universidad de Manila (UDM) participated in the National Budget Congress on July 7, 2025, joining fellow student representatives from various universities in an educational engagement focused on financial responsibility and effective leadership.
Representing the UDM Supreme Student Government (SSG) were Angela May Cirera, Vice President for Internal Affairs; Charls Harold Naval, Auditor; and John Cyted Batu, Fourth Year Representative.
Their participation highlighted UDM’s commitment to developing student leaders equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to promote responsible governance and meaningful service.
Strengthening Financial Literacy and Responsible Leadership
The National Budget Congress provided a platform for student leaders to deepen their understanding of responsible financial planning, budget management, and resource stewardship.
Through discussions and interactive workshops, participants explored the importance of managing financial resources responsibly, an essential competency for student organizations entrusted with supporting programs and activities that benefit their constituents.
For the UDM representatives, the congress offered an opportunity to reflect on how financial accountability contributes to effective organizational leadership.
The knowledge gained from the engagement can support more informed decision-making, responsible allocation of organizational resources, and improved financial management practices within student-led initiatives.
Building Connections Across Universities
Beyond financial education, the congress created opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange among student leaders from different higher education institutions.
UDM representatives engaged with fellow student leaders, including members of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) Supreme Student Council.
These interactions provided opportunities to exchange perspectives, learn from different leadership experiences, and establish professional connections that may support future student-led collaborations.
The activity demonstrated that meaningful leadership development extends beyond individual institutions and benefits from dialogue, shared experiences, and collective learning.
Empowering Student Leaders Through Meaningful Education
UDM’s participation reflects its commitment to educational experiences that extend beyond conventional classroom instruction.
By encouraging student leaders to participate in national discussions and workshops, the university supports the development of practical competencies essential to responsible citizenship and public service.
Financial literacy, ethical decision-making, and organizational accountability are particularly important for student leaders who manage resources and represent the interests of their fellow students.
The congress reinforced the idea that effective student governance requires both leadership commitment and the capacity to make informed, responsible decisions.
Advancing Sustainable Development Through Education and Partnerships
The initiative supports the broader objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Through participation in financial education and inter-university engagement, UDM contributes to developing socially responsible student leaders who value accountability, institutional integrity, and collaborative action.
The experience also illustrates how meaningful education can strengthen leadership competencies that extend beyond academic achievement and contribute to responsible institutional governance.
As the university continues to encourage student participation in educational and leadership development initiatives, it reinforces its commitment to preparing individuals who can serve their communities with competence, integrity, and purpose.
At Universidad de Manila, leadership is measured not only by the positions students hold but by the responsibility, accountability, and positive impact they bring to the communities they serve.
