Universidad de Manila advances gender equality and inclusive workplace practices through a capacity-building initiative involving 33 faculty and administrative personnel.
MANILA, Philippines — Building an inclusive university begins with recognizing the dignity, rights, and contributions of every individual. Strengthening its commitment to gender equality and respectful workplace relationships, the Universidad de Manila (UDM) conducted a Gender Sensitivity Training on August 19, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
The activity engaged 33 selected faculty members and administrative employees from different university departments, including 17 women and 16 men.
The initiative emphasized the continuing importance of gender awareness in an increasingly technology-driven society, where interactions within educational institutions, workplaces, and digital environments require greater sensitivity, fairness, and mutual respect.
Strengthening Gender Awareness in the Modern Workplace
As workplaces evolve alongside technological advancements, promoting gender sensitivity remains essential in creating environments where individuals feel respected, valued, and included.
The training provided opportunities for participants to reflect on gender-related issues and consider how everyday interactions, institutional practices, and communication behaviors can influence workplace experiences.
Through discussions of real-life campus situations, participants were encouraged to examine gender expectations, identify potentially discriminatory practices, and explore approaches that promote respectful professional relationships.
The activity highlighted the importance of moving beyond awareness toward practical actions that support dignity, fairness, and inclusion.
Promoting Inclusive Institutional Practices
A significant component of the training involved small-group discussions and the development of practical ideas for fostering gender-responsive environments.
Participants explored the importance of respectful communication, equitable treatment, and shared responsibility in maintaining a positive institutional culture.
The training also emphasized the relevance of gender sensitivity in online environments, recognizing that respectful behavior and fair treatment must extend to digital communication and technology-mediated interactions.
These discussions reinforced the importance of developing institutional practices that recognize individual differences while promoting equal dignity and opportunity.
Building Gender-Responsive Workplaces
The training highlighted several important elements of a gender-sensitive workplace, including institutional policies, physical environments, language and communication, training and awareness, and reporting mechanisms.
These dimensions demonstrate that promoting gender equality requires more than individual awareness. It also involves institutional structures and practices that support fairness, safety, and accountability.
By strengthening understanding of these elements, UDM encouraged participants to recognize their roles in fostering respectful and inclusive professional environments.
The activity also provided an opportunity to reflect on how institutional policies and everyday workplace practices can contribute to a culture that discourages discrimination and promotes mutual respect.
Empowering Faculty and Administrative Personnel
The participation of 33 faculty and administrative employees reflected the university’s commitment to strengthening gender awareness among its personnel.
With 17 female and 16 male participants, the training emphasized the importance of involving individuals of different genders in advancing equality.
Faculty members and administrative personnel play essential roles in shaping the university environment through their interactions with students, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
By strengthening their awareness of gender-sensitive practices, participants can contribute to building a more respectful and supportive academic community.
Advancing SDG 5: Gender Equality
The initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality) by promoting awareness of discrimination, respectful workplace relationships, and inclusive institutional practices.
It also contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) through professional development and capacity-building opportunities for university personnel.
Furthermore, the activity relates to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through its emphasis on respectful, fair, and inclusive workplace environments.
Through initiatives such as Gender Sensitivity Training, UDM demonstrates its commitment to integrating equality and inclusion into institutional learning and professional development.
Sustaining a Culture of Equality and Respect
The Gender Sensitivity Training reinforces the understanding that inclusive institutions are built through continuous learning, awareness, and collective responsibility.
By encouraging faculty members and administrative employees to reflect on gender-related concerns and explore practical approaches to respectful workplace interactions, UDM contributes to the development of a more gender-responsive academic environment.
The initiative serves as a reminder that meaningful institutional transformation begins when individuals recognize their responsibilities in promoting fairness, dignity, and mutual respect.
At Universidad de Manila, equality begins with awareness, inclusion grows through understanding, and lasting institutional change happens when respect becomes everyone’s responsibility.
