In an effort to foster a culture of intellectual exploration and innovation, the University of Manila has reaffirmed its dedication to academic freedom through provisions in its University Code. This policy, aimed at both faculty and students, underscores the institution’s mission to create an open and dynamic learning environment where individuals can pursue their academic passions without fear of censorship or restriction.
The new policy at the University of Manila emphasizes several key provisions to enhance
academic freedom. Faculty and students are encouraged to engage in research and teaching that align with their areas of expertise, fostering intellectual growth and cultural understanding. Faculty members are granted autonomy to select their research topics, express their opinions on public issues, and retain control over their intellectual property. Students are empowered to participate in mass media and publish their ideas through university–supported platforms, such as newspapers and journals, in accordance with campus journalism laws. While the university retains the authority to determine curricular content and academic standards, this policy ensures a balance between freedom and accountability in educational practices.
This policy strengthens the university’s role as a bastion of academic freedom, essential for
fostering critical thought and innovation in today’s rapidly evolving world.
