CED History

The College of Education, formerly known as the Education Department, has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1995 as a premier college at the City College of Manila. Since its establishment, this pioneering program has been a stalwart in providing top-notch pre-service training, delivering curricula deeply rooted in Filipino values, and nurturing the future educators of our nation. Throughout its journey, the College has been under the able leadership of several distinguished individuals.

Prof. Francia G. Sierra served as the inaugural chairperson of the department from 1995 to 1997, laying the foundation for the College’s commitment to excellence in education. Subsequently, a succession of notable Deans continued to shape the College’s trajectory, including luminaries such as Dr. Ma. Rita R. Aranda, Dr. Susan S. Aguilos, Dr. Jose M. de Leon, Dr. Virginia I. Berganio, Dr. Ma. Jacqueline B. Patarata, Dr. Ma. Victoria I. Crisostomo, Dr. Antonio A. Taringting, and Prof. Alistair B. Selorio. Each of them contributed significantly to the College’s growth and mission.

However, on August 1, 2022, a new chapter in the history of the College of Education began with the appointment of Dr. Amalfi B. Tabin, Jr., a trailblazing faculty member and visionary educator, stepped into the role of Dean. His tenure heralds a fresh era for the College, marked by innovative developments and a steadfast commitment to excellence in education. With his extensive experience and forward-thinking approach, Dr. Tabin is poised to lead the College of Education toward new heights.

Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Tabin, the College of Education is embarking on a transformative journey. This new phase is marked by a renewed emphasis on contemporary educational practices, cutting-edge research, and community engagement. Dr. Tabin’s vision includes fostering a dynamic learning environment that prepares educators to excel in the ever-evolving landscape of education. The Bachelor in Secondary Education is an extensive four-year undergraduate degree program and board course meticulously designed to cultivate and equip future educators and mentors with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in teaching at the secondary level, encompassing both junior and senior high school in the basic education spectrum. This comprehensive program offers students the opportunity to specialize in one of four distinct majors, allowing them to tailor their education to their specific career aspirations and interests. These majors are:

PROGRAMS

This comprehensive four-year undergraduate degree program is meticulously crafted to prepare Pre-Service Teachers for the dynamic field of Mathematics education within the context of Basic Education, with a primary focus on Secondary schools. The curriculum is thoughtfully structured to equip graduates with a deep understanding of the diverse interests and capabilities of students across various levels of Mathematical proficiency.

At its core, the program places a strong emphasis on cultivating problem-solving acumen, fostering a robust mathematical thinking process, and honing the art of actively engaging children and young adults through technology-infused teaching methods. By merging cutting-edge pedagogy with technological innovation, this program ensures that its Mathematics graduates emerge not only as adept educators but as facilitators of 21st-century skills, thus enabling them to excel as competitive and forward-thinking Mathematics teachers in today’s ever-evolving educational landscape.

Within this program, the courses are thoughtfully crafted to establish strong connections between the advanced English language proficiencies required by the Basic Education Curriculum, particularly in the realm of Secondary Education, and the nuanced literacies essential for success in the 21st century. This rigorous four-year undergraduate professional preparation program in Social Studies is meticulously designed to shape Pre-Service Teachers into adept educators, equipped with the essential skills needed to nurture an enlightened and engaged citizenry within our diverse yet inclusive society. The program places a strong emphasis on fostering critical thinking abilities concerning Social Studies curriculum frameworks and materials. Moreover, it imparts the art of curriculum development deeply rooted in empirical research, ensuring that future educators are well-versed in evidence-based instructional practices.

In addition, this program also places a premium on developing sensitivity and adeptness in handling potentially contentious topics within the realm of Social Studies, including but not limited to history, culture, race relations, gender issues, war, peace, economic equality, social opportunities, and global interdependence. By honing these critical competencies, the program prepares teachers to navigate the intricacies and complexities of 21st-century classrooms, arming them with the tools to effectively address contemporary challenges while reaping the rewards of fostering well-informed and socially responsible citizens.

The Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) program is a comprehensive undergraduate degree course meticulously crafted to equip Pre-Service Teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary for the multifaceted role of teaching music, arts, physical education, and health within the school curriculum. Beyond traditional classroom instruction, this program is designed to foster a lifelong appreciation for physical activity, offering a diverse array of recreational activities, organized sports, and competitive pursuits.

At its core, BPEd seeks to create equal opportunities for students to develop healthy physical activity habits while honing their teaching abilities. This program serves as a gateway to explore various facets of the sports and physical education landscape, including coaching, program development, and sports administration. It achieves this by providing a well-rounded, quality education that thrives in a dynamic, community-centered, and research-oriented environment.

In essence, the Bachelor of Physical Education program not only shapes educators but also empowers them to inspire future generations to lead active and healthy lives, fostering a holistic approach to physical well-being and education within the school setting.

I am deeply honored and humbled to have been awarded the Outstanding Global Educational Leader Award during the prestigious 2023 International Who's Who Award last December 28, 2023 at the Networld Hotel in Pasay City, under the theme "Bridging Boundaries: Unleashing Educational Excellence through Multidisciplinary Perspectives." This recognition is a testament to the collective efforts of Betma English based in Vietnam and Philippine Aloysian Publications in advancing educational excellence globally. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the organizations for their unwavering support and commitment to fostering multidisciplinary perspectives in education. Receiving this award serves as motivation to continue pushing boundaries, fostering innovation, and contributing to the evolution of educational practices on a global scale. I am truly grateful for this honor and look forward to continued collaboration and growth in the realm of education.
